Serengale
Homestead & Vineyard
Serengale is nestled at the base of the Victorian Alps in the independent wine region of Beechworth. The vines were planted in 1999, 2000 and 2003 on northeast-facing slopes at an altitude of 320 meters above sea level. The unique ancient Devonian soil of the vineyard is made up of decomposed granite, loam and clay, with grape varieties of chardonnay, pinot gris, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz chosen specifically for the site.
Initially supplying fruit to Brown Brothers for their Patricia label and a long association supplying chardonnay grapes with Savaterre and other local vignerons, in 2015 Serengale built their own winery to produce award-winning Estate wines.
The wines and vineyard were identified in 2020 Halliday Wine Companion as one of the Top Ten new Wineries and a notable vineyard in the Beechworth wine region. The vineyard has ample water with two dams totalling 22 ML capacity, a ground water license of 30ML, surface water licenses and a spring-fed dam.
The owners have a strong focus on sustainability for soil and vine health and believe that 80% of producing excellent wines starts in the vineyard. With an established cover crop grown in the interrow, sheep grazing during the winter months for weed control and fertilisation, utilization of organic principles, hand pruning and harvesting all combine to improve vine balance, reduce disease and pest pressure in the vineyard. This type of management protects the vineyard and enhances the terroir allowing the vines to be in balance and ensuring that the fruit develops their full flavour, showcasing the terroir whilst also protecting and further developing the vines.
The 21.56 ha property comprises a premium 7.1 ha vineyard, modern winery, Cellar Door, machinery shed, workshop and office. There is also a large 4-bedroom owners residence, with outdoor entertaining area, pool and expansive established gardens and orchard. A studio apartment is separate from the residence which can give extra income. The property also has equestrian facilities and cattle yards for managing stock
Serengale is located 3 hours from Melbourne and 11 km from the historical tourist town of Beechworth with its restaurants, cafes and shops.
